Our Practice

Thank you for the opportunity to provide dental care for your child.  We recognize that this may be a new experience for you and your child.   Here is valuable information about our practice and its philosophies.  Please take a moment to read this section carefully.

Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric dentists are specialists with two to three years of post-doctoral training who are dedicated to the oral health of children from infancy through the teenage years.  Dr. Martha Ann Keels completed this training at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Dr. Cynthia Neal completed this training at The Medical University of South Carolina.  We understand the behavioral differences between the very young, preteens, and teenagers.  We want to guide their dental growth and development, and help them avoid future dental problems.

We believe that the first dental examination for child should occur between the ages of 12 and 18 months.  Early diagnosis and treatment (if necessary) can prevent later, more serious problems.

Goals:  We want you child to leave our practice with a healthy dentition and positive attitude toward dental care.  A healthy dentition is free from decay, periodontal disease and malocclusion.  The prevention of dental disease is team effort, so don’t be surprised if we ask for your help at our office.

Before the first visit:  Please discuss the positive aspects of dentistry with your child.  Convey good feelings to your child about dental visits being a part of growing up.  Explain that the dentist will look at and count all his or her teeth.  Please do not tell your child that the dentist will not hurt, as this may have never entered his or her mind.  Rather, emphasize that the dentist will be gentle and friendly.  Avoid using words like needle, drill, shot, pull or any other word suggesting unpleasantness.  Expect your child to do well and enjoy the first visit to our office and chances are, they will.

The initial appointment has been reserved just for you.  Obviously any change in this appointment affects many patients.  If you must cancel, we need to know at least 24 hours in advance.
